There is only one Port Authority bus that runs along Brookline Blvd, the 39. Outbound buses leave downtown along Smithfield St at 8:58, 10:28, 11:58, and every 90 minutes thereafter.
Inbound buses leave the library at 12:42, 2:12, 3:42, 5:12 and 6:42.
If the wait for the 39 is too long, and you are willing to walk a little more than 1/4 of a mile, the 41 runs along West Liberty Ave, which crosses Brookline Blvd, and runs between Brookline and Downtown (Smithfield St) every 60 minutes.
